| The letter reads as follows.
To: Messrs Perkins, Bacon & Petch, 69 Fleet Street, London
From: Mungo Ponton, Secretary, National Bank of Scotland, Edinburgh
Dated: 2nd March 1844.

Gentlemen,
I duly received your letter of 22nd Ultimo with a copy of your a/c and having examined the same we find you have omitted to debit & credit us with £170 for the duty on 400 £100 Notes which we observe was paid to you by Messrs. Glyn & Co. on the 7th Ultimo. We have made the requisite alterations on the account in pencil, which we return enclosed for your inspection, and if you find we are correct you will please send us a copy of the account amended, when we shall remit the balance.
You will observe we have deducted the cost of the 8 Reams Large Note paper which was spoiled making the nett balance due to you £178. 6. 4.
I am
Gentlemen,
Yours respectfully,
M Ponton, Secretary.
Nothing of particular of material interest although this letter it does again illustrate that the printers were not necessarily providing a mistake free service.
Interesting to note the letter is on Pre printed Headed Paper. The National Bank of Scotland was established in 1825 with a capital of £5,000,000 divided into 50,000 shares of £100 each.
Mungo Ponton was the Secretary of the National Bank of Scotland at this time although I have very little additional information regarding him. |
