A brief look at letters to and from Scottish Banks

The letter reads as follows.

To:             Messrs Perkins, Bacon & Petch, London.

From:         Henry Paterson, Manager, North of Scotland Banking Company, Aberdeen.

Dated:         5th June 1839.

Gentlemen,

    I have your favour of 27th April annexing account for £20 15. 9 and now hand you Credit as above for the like sum, of which please own receipt, and forward us, the soonest possible two thousand Agents Letters of Credit.

             Henry Paterson, Manager.

The reference to "as above" relates to an area of the letter (now removed) which would contain the handwritten bill either drawn by Henry Paterson on The North of Scotland Banking Company or the Bank's London Agent.

The North of Scotland Banking Company was founded in Aberdeen on 21st November 1836.

Henry Paterson was recruited by the Bank in 1836 as Manager and left his post with the National Provisional Bank of England to take up his new position which commanded an annual salary of £500.
