A brief look at letters to and from Scottish Banks
Early 19th Century Banking Letters (Pre May 1840)

This area of the site covers letters sent to and / or from Banks for the period from 1st January 1800 to April 1840.  I have also included other where the content makes reference to a Bank or to Banking.

The year of 1840 is of no great relevance to Banking although May 1840 sees the introduction  of the Penny Black Postage stamp with this leading to major reforms within the Postal System.

2nd January 1802 - Charles Addison, Bo'ness to John Likly, Paisley Union Banking Company - "Wealthy Partner of the Bank seeking Loan"

6th July 1805 - James Patten, Renfrewshire Banking Company, Greenock to Messrs. Clark Ralston & Co., Campbeltown "Possible Whisky links"

19th May 1812 - James Ker, Leith Banking Company to Alexander Macdonald, Leith Banking Company, Callander - "Laird of Macnab's Bill"

11th March 1822 - Wm. Balfour to Bank of Scotland, Kirkcaldy - "Morgan of Pistol Duel fame"

3rd December 1825 - David Webster, Provincial Bank of Ireland, Clonmel to Alexander Ramsay, Falkirk Banking Company " Application for Post as Cashier"

12th January 1827 - John Sinclair Cunningham, Commercial Bank of Scotland, Stirling to Messrs. William Wilson & Son, Manufacturers, Bannockburn - "Tartan Manufacturer"

7th January 1830 -  Archibald Bennet, Secretary, Bank of Scotland to Messrs. A & A Ramsay, Falkirk - "not satisfied that Gas is safe"
